Overview
The Certificate in Responsible AI and Digital Literacies is a 20 ECTS, NFQ Level 6 programme designed to address a clearly defined and increasingly urgent skills gap arising from the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence across business and society.
By focusing on responsible use, digital literacies, and critical engagement rather than technical development, the award aligns with both employer needs and national policy priorities, supporting the development of an AI-capable workforce that can operate effectively within contemporary organisational environments.
The programme provides a structured and accessible pathway for learners to develop the knowledge, practical competencies, and critical awareness required to engage with AI in a meaningful and responsible manner. Its emphasis on applied learning, ethical understanding, and evaluative judgement ensures that learners are not only capable of using AI tools but can do so with an informed awareness of their limitations and implications. This positioning aligns with labour market signals identified by the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs, which emphasise the growing importance of “dual-skilling,” where domain-specific expertise is complemented by the ability to engage with AI tools in a critical and informed manner.
As AI becomes embedded across functions such as administration, marketing, operations, and customer engagement, graduates are expected to contribute in roles that require the responsible use of AI to support decision-making, communication, and workflow efficiency.
What will I study?
The Certificate in Responsible AI and Digital Literacies comprises four interconnected modules that collectively establish key capabilities in digital literacies, critical thinking, and ethical awareness that are essential prerequisites for progression into programmes focused on AI implementation, solution development, or data-driven decision-making. In this sense, it supports coherent learner progression while avoiding duplication of content at higher levels.
The modules combine practical application with critical understanding, enabling learners to build expertise in:
AI Ethics & Societal Impacts
This module examines artificial intelligence as a socio-technical phenomenon, focusing on the ethical principles and societal consequences associated with its development and use. The module introduces key concepts such as fairness, accountability, transparency, and data protection, enabling learners to understand how bias, misinformation, and unequal impacts can arise within AI systems. It also situates these issues within broader organisational and societal contexts, including the implications of AI for employment, decision-making, and social inclusion. The emphasis is on developing informed awareness and critical understanding, ensuring that learners can recognise ethical risks and engage with AI in a responsible and contextually grounded manner.
AI and Digital Literacies
This module focuses on developing the practical and cognitive skills required to engage effectively with AI-enabled and digital technologies in everyday contexts. The module emphasises the ability to interpret and evaluate digital information, understand how AI-generated outputs are produced, and recognise their limitations. It also addresses issues such as data awareness, source reliability, and appropriate use of digital tools for communication and information processing. The overall aim is to move learners beyond basic usage towards informed and critical engagement, enabling them to navigate digital environments with confidence, accuracy, and responsibility.
Critical Thinking for AI
This module focuses on developing learners’ capacity to question, analyse, and evaluate AI-generated content and claims in a structured and disciplined manner. The module emphasises the distinction between plausible and valid outputs, encouraging learners to interrogate sources, identify bias, and assess the reliability and relevance of information produced by AI systems. It also develops reasoning skills required to challenge assumptions, recognise limitations, and make informed judgements when using AI in decision-making contexts. The overall aim is to foster a reflective and analytical approach to AI use, ensuring that learners do not accept outputs uncritically but instead engage with them in a deliberate, evidence-informed way.
GenAI & Digital Transformation
This module provides an overview of how generative artificial intelligence and related digital technologies are reshaping organisational processes, communication practices, and business models. The module introduces the core capabilities of generative systems and examines their application within everyday work contexts, including content creation, automation, and decision support. It also considers the broader implications of digital transformation, highlighting how AI is driving changes in workflows, roles, and value creation. The emphasis is on developing an informed understanding of how these technologies function in practice and how they can be applied in a structured and purposeful manner within contemporary organisational environments.
Career options
Graduates of the Certificate in Responsible AI and Digital Literacies are expected to emerge as informed, critically aware users of artificial intelligence who can operate effectively within AI-enabled environments. The profile is intentionally positioned at the intersection of applied digital capability and evaluative judgement. Rather than preparing learners for specialist technical roles, the programme develops individuals who can interpret AI outputs, assess their reliability, and apply them appropriately within organisational and societal contexts, while maintaining an awareness of ethical, legal, and governance considerations.
Typical progression opportunities include roles or role enhancement in:
- Administrative and operational support, digital coordination, business support functions, and early supervisory positions where AI tools are increasingly used but not formally structured.
- Support organisational practices related to AI governance, contributing to areas such as policy awareness, responsible use guidelines, and internal communication around AI adoption.
The award provides a foundation for further study within the broader stackable pathway, enabling progression into more technically oriented programmes where learners can build on their understanding of AI concepts, tools, and applications. In this sense, the graduate profile is defined less by specific job titles and more by a set of transferable capabilities that are becoming increasingly essential across sectors.
The programme, therefore, responds to the evolving nature of work, where the ability to engage critically and responsibly with AI is emerging as a baseline expectation rather than a specialist skill.
Applications
Applicants should hold a professional qualification in any discipline and have industry experience. In line with institutional policy, applicants may be admitted through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) where they can demonstrate appropriate academic or experiential learning.
What is RPL?
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is when formal recognition is given for what you already know prior to starting on a programme or module. With recognition of prior learning the focus is on learning and not on experience as such. You can apply for RPL in any MTU accredited programme or module. Programmes which are accredited by professional bodies or any external awarding bodies may have their own procedures for RPL which you should refer to.
Language requirements
Those for whom English is not their first language are required to have an IELTS of 6.5 or above.
Full Fee: €2000
Applicants will be required to pay an acceptance fee of €300 online if a place on a course is offered. This fee is deductible from the overall course fee. You will not be charged for applying for the programme by clicking the ‘apply now’ button; you are only asked to pay an acceptance fee if a place is offered to you and you wish to accept it.
Please note: Course fees may be subject to an annual increase.
